From the garden, I watch the barges go in and out of Hilo delivering our Island a bland food supply. I think of all the flavor being lost in the delivery of weeks old produce from the mainland. And I feel a real need to grow better quality and more nutritious and flavorful produce here.
For the health of taste-buds, and body, I have decided to migrate toward a Big Island only diet rich in flavor and full of nutrients. The food I work with in the kitchen today was harvested moments ago and is still bursting with flavor. Any time someone tastes what I'm eating they talk for days about how good the food is.
To me, amazing food is a norm because I eat what I grow.
Lately, I've been making hearty taro pancakes, pasture raised eggs, succulent smoked meat, mouth watering pumpkin pies, soft sweet-potato snacks, mountainous garden salads, fresh aromatic pasta sauces, soothing herbal teas, wonderfully diverse stir-frys, and just about any other tantalizing cuisine that's in season. Most of my diet comes from my garden.
I'm addicted to delicious food, and to make sure I have a steady stream, I want to make it easier for anyone to share their growing abundance. The supermarket is nice because of the wide variety it offers, and I know the same effect can be accomplished by linking backyard gardeners together. We can grow better tasting food locally, in fact, we already do.
Over the summer, I'll be around sharing my vision, eating great, and working toward a more delicious food supply for everyone.
